GPS

« Back to Glossary Index

Global Positioning System (GPS) is a network of U.S. government earth orbiting satellites that broadcast precise timing signals by radio to a receiver, allowing the receiver’s location and other information to be computed by trilateration. Receivers can be hand-held or used in vehicles, stationary objects such as buildings, or even bicycles.

Used for navigational systems in vehicles as well as the commonly used phone apps like Google Maps and Apple Maps.
